Mandy's Story

Mandy is from Wolverhampton, and a leading member of the RoadPeace West Midlands Group. On 19th February 2018, Mandy’s father, Hopton, was killed while on a pelican crossing. The 19-year-old driver was speeding, racing with another car driver. After hitting Mandy’s dad, he stopped to punch a hole in his smashed windscreen so that he could see, and drove away. The driver pled guilty to Causing Death by Dangerous Driving at the final opportunity, and was sentenced to 4 years and 9 months in prison.

Hopton was a quiet and thoughtful man, who cared deeply for his children and adored his grandchildren. Hopton loved Mandy’s dog, Ralph, and would come to walk him each day. The sudden and horrific way in which Hopton’s life was taken had a devastating effect on Mandy, causing her to withdraw and lose confidence.

Mandy describes the first time she attended a RoadPeace meeting as the moment ‘her brain could stop for a moment and she could finally breathe’. Mandy works hard to ensure families affected by road death receive the support and help navigating the criminal justice system they so desperately need – she has also become a tireless advocate for road crime to be treated as real crime.

We have zero tolerance to road incidents.

So what are we doing about it? We are taking action to tackle dangerous and anti-social driving and removing unsafe vehicles from the road. This will range from uninsured drivers, street cruising, dangerous driving and road racing.

You said it, we did it. See our action plan here:
